5.0 out of 5 stars - Reviewer: Jacqui Jay Grafton
Well written, tightly plotted, and with memorable characters.
This is the first of Carol Kravetz's books I have read, although it is the latest in her series featuring the four detectives from Bathville, Massachusetts. I was attracted to it both because I enjoy the thriller genre and because it was largely set in my homeland of Northern Ireland.
Although the characters all have a back history, I had no problem reading The Return as a stand-alone. There were a few references to past adventures but done in such a way that they served to further build an understanding of the four individuals who have very distinct, fully fleshed identities. Kravetz never rushes in her writing and her attention to and knowledge of both the countries and the police force procedures is impeccable. I felt like I really knew these people and felt a prickle of tears more than once (no spoilers!)
There were a few times when I was frustrated with the actions of some of the ancillary characters but just accepted that they were human and we all make less than perfect choices at times.
Well written, tightly plotted, and with memorable characters, you will want to read more about. What else could you want in a book?
